Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is a type of hydroelectric energy storage. 1. The Pumped Storage System and Its Constituent Elements Pumped storage hydro is a mature energy storage method. It uses the characteristics of the gravitational potential energy of water for easy energy storage, with a large energy storage scale, fast adjustment speed, flexible operation and high efficiency .
The system also requires power as it pumps water back into the upper reservoir (recharge). PSH acts similarly to a giant battery, because it can store power and then release it when needed. The Department of Energy's "Pumped Storage Hydropower" video explains how pumped storage works.
Pumped hydro storage is the only large energy storage technique widely used in power systems. For decades, utilities have used pumped hydro storage as an economical way to utilise off-peak energy, by pumping water to a reservoir at a higher level.
With the adoption of pumped-storage technology, hydropower stations will be responsible for providing ancillary services to power systems, such as peak shaving and frequency regulation.
