A comprehensive review of fast-changing vehicle-integrated photovoltaic (VIPV) products and lightweight PV cell and module technologies adapted for integration into electric vehicles (EVs) is presented in this paper. The number of VIPV projects and/or products is on a steady rise, especially car-based PV integration.
Two types of PV-powered applications for electric mobility are being considered at the moment: Vehicle-integrated PV (VIPV): In these applications, PV cells or PV modules are integrated into the vehicle body and produce electricity which can be used for powering the vehicle's electric engine or stored in the battery pack as shown in Figure 3.
Considering three commonly used vehicle variants in the automotive sector, such as the hatchback, sedan, and sport utility vehicle, Fig. 12 describes the average available area (in m 2), which aids in integrating solar photovoltaic cells .
The design projects also proposed PV-powered mobility solutions for different vehicles beyond passenger cars. This type of vehicle was covered in 5 of the 11 designs, with the rest focusing on city buses or trains (4 concepts), vans (2), electric bicycles (1) and utility vehicles (1).
