Contact UsEnergy storage in remote areas is not just about generating power; it's about empowering communities and fostering sustainable development.
Rural energy communities offer a range of benefits spanning environmental, economic, social, and energy/grid efficiency dimensions. Promoting local renewable energy production significantly contributes to reducing CO₂ emissions, boosting local economies, and improving infrastructure (Ferrari et al., 2022; Yi et al., 2023).
Beyond producing energy for local consumption, rural areas can contribute significantly to broader energy networks. The energy generated in these areas can be transported to urban centres and integrated into larger grids for electricity and heat production (Gaiser and Stroeve, 2014; Raimondi et al., 2024).
The articles identify 4 types of challenges in developing energy communities in rural areas (categorised in Annex 2 with references): (i) Economic and financial challenges. 21% of the articles discuss the financial sustainability and cost-effectiveness issues energy projects face.
Focusing on technological feasibility and economic benefits ensures resilient, scalable, and viable energy solutions. Addressing environmental sustainability and resource management advances rural energy solutions. Focusing on socio-economic and regulatory factors ensures community acceptance and policy support.
For this reason, the energy produced must be stored efficiently to eliminate the imbalance between production and consumption and used during periods of low or no production. Energy storage systems play a key role in addressing the intermittency of renewable energy sources.
