Electricity demand peaks at a different time than PV generation, leading to energy surpluses and deficits.
Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic (PV) panels, convert sunlight into electrical energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering energy bills. The average solar panel produces around 200-400 watts of power, with high-efficiency panels producing up to 500 watts or more.
In the US alone, the figure is slightly lower. The latest data shows solar producing 3% of total US electricity in 2020. The EIA predicts that this share will increase to 20% by 2050. What percentage of renewable energy is solar?
Of those, at least 519,409 were residential installations, meaning less than 2% of the 28 million homes in the UK are generating electricity from solar panels – a figure that will hopefully continue to increase as solar panel costs get more affordable in the coming years.
Figure 1 shows PV generation in watts for a solar PV system on 11 July 2020, when it was sunny throughout the day and on 13 July when there was a mixture of sun and cloud. A south facing solar PV system will tend to generate more around noon.
The total energy generated by solar panels depends on system size and overall efficiency. A well-sized solar system can generate thousands of kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, significantly lowering electricity bills and reducing carbon footprint.
