The Solar System formed about 4.6 billion years ago when a giant cloud of gas and dust collapsed and started to spin. Most of the material went into forming the Sun, and the rest became planets and other objects. There are eight main planets, including Earth, and many moons that orbit them.
Our solar system consists of an average star we call the Sun, the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. It includes: the satellites of the planets; numerous comets, asteroids, and meteoroids; and the interplanetary medium.
The Solar System possesses several distinctive features that set it apart from other star systems and celestial structures in the universe. These characteristics include: Central Star: The Sun, a yellow dwarf star of spectral type G2V. Sun's Size: Approximately 1.4 million kilometers in diameter (109 times the diameter of Earth).

Minor bodies in the Solar System include all objects that are neither planets, dwarf planets, nor moons.
