Enter: energy storage systems. ESS are a game-changing technology that address the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind by offering the ability to store the energy that they produce for later use. Without ESS, there would be nowhere to store the excess renewable-generated energy and it would simply go to waste.
In the commercial and industrial sectors, businesses utilize ESS to optimize energy costs and ensure reliability. Furthermore, residential energy storage systems allow homeowners to harness solar power effectively, providing energy independence and backup during outages.
The ESSs can be used for different applications required by specific wind farms, grid operators or consumers. For the generation-side, it can aim to improve the grid-friendliness of wind farms to dispatch wind energy such that they could be controlled like conventional power plants.
A hybrid wind-solar storage system based on gravity ESS was proposed in, which aims at minimizing the total cost of the system. Three evaluation indexes were proposed to evaluate the system, including the complementary characteristics of wind power and solar energy, power supply loss rate and the contribution rate of the hybrid system.
