Contact UsFlywheel Energy Storage System Applications An FESS is suitable for various applications ranging from large-scale power grids to small-scale households. Rather than large-scale manufacturing equipment, FESS arrays are generally used to achieve high-power and high-capacity storage, allowing a more flexible power configuration.
This project explored flywheel energy storage R&D to reach commercial viability for utility scale energy storage. This required advancing the design, manufacturing capability, system cost, storage capacity, efficiency, reliability, safety, and system level operation of flywheel energy storage technology.
Flywheel technology is a method of energy storage that uses the principles of rotational kinetic energy. A flywheel is a mechanical device that stores energy by spinning a rotor at very high speeds.
For a long time, flywheels had the unique purpose of smoothing the energy output: however, it's intrinsic for this kind of device to store energy.
However, only a small percentage of the energy stored in them can be accessed, given the flywheel is synchronous (Ref. 2). FESS is used for short-time storage and typically offered with a charging/discharging duration between 20 seconds and 20 minutes. However, one 4-hour duration system is available on the market.
This flywheel, when paired to a motor/generator unit, behaves like a battery and energy can be stored for hours and dispatched on demand. The system service life is 20 years, without limits to depth of discharge, charge cycles, or sensitivity to temperature extremes, using recyclable materials.
