Qatar Airways categorizes lithium batteries into three types: lithium-metal (non-rechargeable), lithium-ion (rechargeable), and installed batteries. Devices like smartwatches (lithium-metal) and power banks (lithium-ion) must follow watt-hour (Wh) limits: 100 Wh for consumer electronics and 160 Wh for approved medical equipment.

Passengers are generally encouraged to carry lithium batteries in their hand luggage rather than checked baggage. This practice allows for immediate access in case of any malfunction. Qatar Airways permits the transport of lithium batteries provided they are within the allowable watt-hour limit.

For frequent travelers carrying power banks, Qatar Airways recommends purchasing airport-approved battery cases with built-in terminal protectors. Passengers transporting batteries for commercial purposes must contact the Qatar Airways Cargo department at least 5 working days before departure. Why Can't Lithium Batteries Be in Checked Baggage?

Passengers are only allowed to carry spare lithium batteries in their carry-on baggage, and the batteries must have a maximum watt-hour rating of 100 Wh (watt-hours) or 2 grams of lithium content. Passengers are also required to take certain precautions when carrying lithium batteries.

About spare batteries - you may carry a maximum of one spare lithium ion battery with a Wh rating not exceeding 300 Wh, or a maximum of two spare lithium ion batteries, each with Wh rating not exceeding 160 Wh. Please make sure that the removed batteries are properly packed in order to prevent short-circuiting or damage.

Other types include –Dry batteries, Nickel Cadmium batteries, Alkaline batteries, etc. *You may carry a maximum of 20 spare batteries. You may not carry small vehicles powered by lithium batteries in your hand or checked baggage, even if the batteries are removed. This is applicable regardless of the watt-hour rating of the batteries.
