Contact UsEnergy Storage Ireland is a newly established representative body composed of industry members who are active in the development of the energy storage market in Ireland.
The framework recognises that the energy storage landscape is rapidly evolving. While Ireland currently relies primarily on battery storage and the Turlough Hill Power Station in County Wicklow, new technologies are emerging that could play a key role in the future.
The Irish Electricity Storage Policy Framework, published after this data was collected, indicates that an immediate route to market for 500 MW of long duration energy storage is currently being developed, with further studies planned to support long duration storage from 2030 to 2040 (Government Of Ireland 2024a).
Appropriate and timely regulatory and market design is therefore essential to allow the deployment of energy storage in Ireland at the scale required to achieve current environmental policy objectives. However, the current policy framework is unsuitable to deliver the volumes and types of energy storage we will require.
Professor Tony Day, Executive Director of the IERC, commented that “Ireland has fluctuating energy dynamics, and as a consequence of being an island, the scale of the power system is such that it provides an excellent test-bed for the evaluation of energy storage solutions.
Significant research and development is ongoing across the world on the development of new energy storage solutions and they could prove an ideal solution for the all-island Irish market, improving energy sustainability and security, while also facilitating achievement of long-term decarbonisation goals.
