Safety Specification Requirements for Lithium Battery Energy Storage Cabinets

This international standard specifies requirements and tests for the product safety of secondary lithium cells and batteries used in electrical energy storage systems with a maximum voltage of DC 1500 V (nominal). Evaluation of batteries requires that the single cells used must meet the relevant safety standard.

The guide is intended to provide a minimum level of electrical safety criteria that could be applied to lithium-based battery energy storage equipment and is the result of extensive collaboration from system manufacturers, certifiers, safety regulators and industry bodies.

From February 1st, 2019, portable lithium ion storage batteries (mobile battery) with a density of 400Wh/L or above, must have a round PSE mark on the product, and meet the other table. The standards for lithium-ion batteries are UL 1642. It is a standard usually used for testing lithium batteries. As lithium batteries continue to gain popularity in electric cars and portable electronics, so there is a need for a method for evaluating their quality.

Not every cabinet or storage solution offers sufficient protection against battery fires. Many manufacturers refer to existing guidelines, such as EN 14470-1. But these do not address the specific risks of lithium-ion batteries. EN 14470-1 cabinets are designed for storing chemicals. They primarily protect against external fire sources.

The number of lithium-ion battery fires continues to rise – and with it, the associated damage. Insurers are taking notice and are introducing increasingly strict requirements for how batteries are charged and stored. In many cases, a fire-resistant battery safe is even mandatory.
