Mozambique Energy Storage New Energy

The recently completed Mozambique Energy for All Project, along with the ongoing Sustainable Energy and Broadband Access in Rural Mozambique Project, have significantly contributed to expanding electricity access. To date, these projects have enabled over 2.6 million Mozambicans to connect to the national grid. ASCENT will build on these efforts.

Globeleq sees battery storage as a key technology for Mozambique's future. Storage costs are expected to continue decreasing, so those systems will become more competitive and will be able to contribute more.

These efforts will significantly advance the Government of Mozambique's goal of achieving universal energy access," said Luc Lecuit, Interim Division Director for Mozambique, Madagascar, Mauritius, Comoros and Seychelles, and Operations Manager for the World Bank in Mozambique.

Our solar power plant in Cuamba was inaugurated in September of 2023. It marked another milestone for Globeleq and Mozambique, as it was the first IPP to integrate a utility-scale energy storage system.

ASCENT Mozambique will enhance the resilience and efficiency of the energy sector, contributing to the country's sustainable and inclusive development," added Jenny Chao, World Bank Senior Energy Specialist and Task Team Leader.

One of the big challenges of Mozambique is its size and shape, which make the transportation of electrons across the country quite expensive. Exporting electricity would bring foreign currency that can support investments in domestic transmission and distribution infrastructure.
