Modern battery technology offers a number of advantages over earlier models, including increased specific energy and energy density (more energy stored per unit of volume or weight), increased lifetime, and improved safety .
Now CATL says its second-generation sodium-ion batteries will have an energy density greater than 200 Wh per kg. That's still a long way from the 300 Wh per kg of the best lithium-ion batteries today, but it's a huge improvement over its first-generation sodium-ion batteries.
Battery storage can help with frequency stability and control for short-term needs, and they can help with energy management or reserves for long-term needs. Storage can be employed in addition to primary generation since it allows for the production of energy during off-peak hours, which can then be stored as reserve power.
